The Sproul
Ranch, a Texas Heritage Ranch, was established in Frazier Canyon
on April 6, 1886 by Robert Stuart Sproul. The Sproul family
traveled by wagon from Mountain Home, Texas in 1885, along with
their herd of livestock and settled first near Twin Peaks
Mountain just west of Alpine. There was a blizzard that winter
and when Robert Stuart gathered his herd, they were in Frazier
Canyon. He decided to stay and homestead there. He continued to
build his herd and ranch, as he purchased land from the Railroad
companies and the Texas School System until he had acquired some
13,000 acres of the beautiful, rugged Davis Mountain country.

The family lived in
a one room log cabin for a time and then built the headquarters
home around the turn of the century. Both buildings are still in
existence. The headquarters house, The Ranch House, has been
home to four generations of Sprouls and is now available to
guests. The ranch, which has been a working cattle ranch for
over 121 years, now belongs to the fourth,
fifth and sixth generations
of Robert Stuart Sproul's descendents.

Robert Stuart Sproul
married Arabella Hiler and raised six children: Alice, Ruth,
McCann Hiler, Lee, Mary and Roberta. Alice served as postmaster
in Fort Davis from 1914-1922. The old Post Office, Mary's Post
Office, is newly remodeled and available to guests. McCann Hiler
became a famous bear and mountain lion hunter in the Davis
Mountains and also built his own ranch, which is part of the
present day ranch. Lee served as Jeff Davis County sheriff,
until he was killed in a shoot out on the ranch by two young men
who robbed the headquarters and stole Sproul horses and guns.
